About Combitz
The Name
The name Combitz has stuck with me since I started selling computer games in 1991. Combitz is short for the company I used to own called "Computa Bitz Home Entertainment Centre". Over 12 years it grew to 4 retail outlets with an annual turnover of just over £500k
The Big Move
I decided I could do more with my life and for others than just stand behind a counter and sell games, so in 2002 I sold my outlets and started working part time while studying at the University of Wolverhampton.
While studying I still had a couple of days spare so I spent some time learning web development and how html pages worked. I have developed a couple of websites for companies and worked with some great people. Some sites are listed below in order of development:
Some old apps in flash actionscript can be seen here too
Next Move
I have now completed my 12 month placement at NMBS where I worked mainly with asp/vbscript to create a content management system for the company to create their own website at www.nmbs.co.uk. The site has a dynamic menu system that enforces multiple levels of security to ensure user have access to their own data and information. The placement included creating a contract management systems, rss news feeds, dynamic page updates, financial accounts reporting, search engine optimisation and much more. It was enlightening to see how a company of this size worked (100+ staff) as I have previously worked for myself and small team companies of 5 - 10 staff.
Just my final 13 weeks left now. Any spare time will be spent rewritting GBU as the previous version was not effecient and uses too much bandwidth to be a viable online game, but I have learnt many ways to improve this now.
